Tolka Rovers 3 – SKB 0
On Sunday last our 12 Premier made the long journey to Mayfield United in Cork for their last 32 game in the SFAI Norton Cup. On a sunny but bitterly cold day they dominated the game from start to finish on an excellent surface – one of three full sized grass pitches that Mayfield United have along with a full sized floodlit astro pitch at their complex in the hills on the northside of Cork city.
Despite having the monopoly of possession and playing with the breeze and the slight slope in the first half they failed to turn their dominance into goals and the sides turned around at half time scoreless. With the elements in their favour it seemed that the home side would make things more difficult but their lack of ambition resulted in their keeping ten men behind the ball at all times. Having twice struck the crossbar the breakthrough eventually arrived 12 minutes from time when Shane Elworthy broke down the right and crossed for substitute Philly Ward to score stylishly with a bicycle kick that the keeper got his hand to but failed to keep out, Ward returned the compliment to Elworthy 5 minutes from time when he played the winger through and Shane finished well from 8 yards.
Our 14 Premier qualified for the last 16 of the SFAI Goodson Cup with a 2-0 home win over St Columbans Boys with goals from Eric Kemani and Keith McCracken. Our 18 Super suffered a set back to their League title ambitions when they went down to a late goal against Bohemians (o-1) at Albert College while our 11, 13 & 15 Premier teams maintained their League positions with good wins over Cherry Orchard F C (1-0) Templeogue United (2-0) and St Malachys Boys (7-0), while our 16 Premier warmed up for their SFAI Cup game this weekend against Home Farm F C with a 1-1 away League draw at Malahide United.
The 10A Sunday put their German experience to good use when they travelled to Cherry Orchard F C in the DDSL Condron Cup and scored an emphatic 5 – 0 win, also in the 10’s section there were cup wins in the DDSL Fitzgerald Cup for the 10 A1 (2-0) against Fettercairn and the 10B (2-0) against Drogheda Boys.
Any lingering hopes our first team might have had of maintaining a challenge for League honours were put to rest on Sunday following a 0 – 1 home defeat to lowly O’Devanney Dunard. This defeat following on from last weeks FAI Junior Cup exit to Shangan Athletic and the Leinster Senior Cup first round defeat by Tolka Rovers (0-3) forms a dismal run which hopefully will come to an end on Sunday when they travel to Freebooters in Kilkenny for a 5th round Leinster Junior Cup tie.
