SKB 13 Major Secure Back to Back Titles

Having started the season quite slow and suffered many heavy defeats,  April saw the team  2nd………from bottom, then the great come back began. Winning game after game, the top of the table began to be reeled in. By the end of May, the title was within their grasp and just needed to win the final 3 games. Having won the first two they stumbled in the last match against Bohemians F C a team already relegated. So it came to a play off with Lourdes Celtic. This was a very tight game and was played in monsoon conditions in the AUL Complex, and it was Patrick Mikoljczak alias “Paddy the Pole” who broke the deadlock and the Saints dominated the remainder of the game to achieve a fantastic back to back double.

Great credit is due to all the squad and the management team of Gerry Strong and Paul McCarthy.

ST KEVINS BOYS RETAIN ALMERE TROPHY

Having  played in Almere every year from 1992 when a team managed by Tony Gibson and Mick O’Callaghan first competed we eventually succeeded in winning the Tournament last summer when Mick McCracken and Martin Doyle’s squad were victorious. We have however, wasted no time in doubling the victory tally this year with the success of our 10.1 Sunday squad managed by Ciaran Kavanagh & Willie Rafter who won the Tournament and the 10.1 Saturday team managed by Darren Doherty & Philip Malone made it a Saints 1 – 2 when they finished runners up having defeated Liverpool School’s in their last game to ensure that the Sunday side would be sure of the title if they defeated Emmen which they duly did with a 4 – 0 victory.

ST KEVINS BOYS 50th ANNIVERSARY GALA BALL

St Kevins Boys 50th Anniversary Gala Ball was held on Saturday May 30th in the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Santry.  Over 400 guests enjoyed what was a most memorable and glamorous occassion. Chairman Michael O’Callaghan welcomed everyone and outlined the history and the progress the Club has made in it’s 50 years and our plans going forward.  Our most illustrious former player Liam Brady reminisced of his early days ihn St Kevins Boys and of his experiences both in the Road Leagues and as a member of an SFAI cup winning team, he invited all current and ex SKB players present to join him on stage for their contribution to the Club over the years to be acknowledged by all those present.

Presentations were made to the Club by John Delaney of the FAI, Paul Lenehan of the Amateur League, Tony Martin of the AUL, Fran Rea of the DDSL and Michael O’Brien of the SFAI.

A selection of photographs taken by Paul Dolan can be viewed on the homepage.  Others will follow.

OVER 35’s CLINCH DOUBLE

Paddy McKane’s over 35’s added the Amateur League Seniors Division 1 Sunday to their Grimes Cup success of last week when they defeated St Columbans at the AUL Complex yesterday evening.

5 S K B PLAYERS HELP DDSL WIN CASHIN CUP

Eoghan Stokes was the star of the DDSL’s Cashin Cup win when he scored a magnificent hat trick in their 4 – 2 win over Donegal & District League.  The DDSL’s fourth goal also came from an SKB player – Jack Byrne from the penalty spot, the five SKB players in action were:  Aaron Myles, Ross Leigh, Ben Greene and the aforementioned Stokes and Byrne. SKB’s Brendan Keeley was part of the DDSL Management team.

Our first team’s up and down season continued  when the deprived Sherriff Y C of clinching the AUL Premier A title with a 1 – 0 win in the AUL Complex.  The goal came half way through the second half from Paul McMillan and indeed had they taken their chances before and after that goal they would not have been flattered by a bigger winning margin. They added to this victory on Tuesday evening with a fully merited 2 – 2 draw at home to Killester United with Keith McDermott netting both the goals.  Their next fixture is next Tuesday June 2nd against Baldoyle United in Brookstone Road.

17’s CLINCH LEAGUE TITLE

Victorious 17 Major League Winners

The under-17 Major 2 team clinched the 2008 / ‘09 league title last night following a 0-0 draw with their closest rivals Killester United at Ellenfield Park. A run of eleven wins, three draws and a single loss made them league winners by six points with a game to spare. This is a just reward for the tremendous efforts put in over the season by Tom and Derek Brennan and their dedicated squad of players.

Sean Heaney rises highest to head the winner in the SFAI Norton Cup Final

12’s STORM TO A LEAGUE & CUP DOUBLE

PENALTIES SINK 11’s

There was mixed fortunes for both our teams in action today in the SFAI Menton Seery & Norton Cups. Our 11 Premier played all the football and took the lead three times during the game through goals from Sean Goulding, Eoin Evans & Philip Ward but they were never able to shake of a resolute Cherry Orchard team who equalized for the third time in injury time. Extra time never looked like producing a winner and with each team’s first five penalties converted excellently Cherry Orchard prevailed when SKB missed their seventh effort although this was a disappointing result both players and management can feel proud of their achievement as DDSL 11 Premier champions this season and for indeed making this final a memorable one despite the result.

Our 12 Premier dominated from start to finish against Crumlin United in the final of the SFAI Norton Cup and indeed a 1 – 0 scoreline does not reflect their dominance throughout. Sean Heaney headed in a Jack Byrne free kick midway through the first half and that turned out to be the winner although Eoin Stokes seemed sure to have added a second soon after but the post intervened. In one of Crumlin’s rare excursions into Kevin’s half in the first half Aaron Myles was forced into a magnificent save with Jordan O’Reilly cleaning up the rebound off the line.  From then on it was one way traffic with Kevin’s running out worthy winners adding the All Ireland title to their DDSL Premier League win.

Well done to all.

Leinster Junior Cup Final

St Kevins Boys 1 Ballymun United 3

A miserable result on a miserable day would be the general verdict of all SKB supporters who were in attendance at Tolka Park yesterday for the Leinster Junior Cup Final against Ballymun United. The game was played in atrocious conditions throughout.  Both teams tested one another out early on but things seemed to be going Kevin’s way when Tony Mc Donnell powered home a header from Robbie Coombes free kick after twenty minutes and at that stage SKB were in control. The turning point in the game came when Tony Mc Donnell received a nasty head injury following a clash of heads with Ballymun’s centre back Karl Murray, despite lengthy attention both on the pitch and on the sideline Tony was unable to resume and it was in the last minute of the time added on at the end of the first half that Ballymun snatched an equalizer when Alan Cosgrave failed to hold a powerful drive and Downey was on hand to tap the ball home on the stroke of the half time whistle. Jordan Lancaster replaced Tony Mc Donnell at the start of the second half but Kevin’s never established any real momentum despite having a fair share of possession in the early stages of the second half.  Two further Ballymun goals from Keeley and Downey ended the game as a contest.

Over 35’s retain A F L Grimes Cup

Over 35s SKB by Paul Dolan.

Our over 35’s got this important week of Cup Finals off to the best possible start when they retained the AFL Grimes Cup beating Whites F C 4 – 1 on Thursday night in the Oscar Traynor Coaching & Development Centre. Two goals each from John Ryan and Mark Boylan (pictured above recieving the trophy) ensured that the cup was retained in a game dominated by SKB from start to finish.

On Sunday morning in the AUL Complex our sole representative on DDSL Cup Finals day were our 16 Major team who played St Patricks Athletic  in the Final of the DDSL Neville Cup. This was a tight game with chances few and far between and it was no surprise that the game ended scoreless after extra time.  In the penalty shoot out SKB had the advantage when Pat’s missed their second penalty but they were unable to clinch matters and Pat’s won out eventually 8 – 7.

On the League front in their midweek fixture our first team were defeated 1 – 0 by Kilbarrack United at Roseglen Road while at home on Sunday they defeated Corduff F C 1 – 0.  Our 17.1 secured another victory to sustain their League challenge when they defeated Dundrum Athletic 3 – 2 on Sunday morning.

Our 13.1 finally overcame arch rivals Cherry Orchard F C following a League and two Cup defeats earlier this season when they came from behind with two second half goals from Josh O’Hanlon and Calvin Jackson to record a 2 – 1 victory they followed this win with a hard fought 1 – 0 victory over Shelbourne F C in the AUL Complex last night.

The gala ball on Saturday May 30th was a wonderful night. To see so many old friends (some of whom have not met in over 30 years) was fantastic.
I would like to pay tribute to all those involved in SKB for all you do. Your organisation is of the highest order, your standards are an example for all and you remain the friendliest and nicest people in sport.
It was great to hear so many of your guests talk (formally and informally) of the esteem in which you are held. Long may your good work continue.
